Makor Shabbat Dinner
Makor (which means "Source" in Hebrew) Shabbat dinners take place on the second Friday of every month in apartments and homes in northern Chicago and as far north as Evanston. It is based on a similar program that takes place in Los Angeles. Here in Chicago, Makor began 5 years ago with only 30 participants and has grown to include 100 participants monthly! Makor is dedicated to building unique learning communities centered around Shabbat dinners. Makor seeks to build Shabbat-centered communities rooted in learning, spiritual seeking, caring, and celebrating.
The Sidney N. Shure Kehilla Program partners with jconnect, a division of the Hillels of Illinois, to provide food and connect participants to hosts who volunteer their homes each month. Hosts meet with rabbis from Kehilla synagogues the night before the dinner to pick up their food (dietary laws observed) as well as learn and discuss issues that will then be a source of conversation at their own tables on Friday night. Dinner is followed by a dessert reception in the Lakeview community within walking distance of many dinners.
Finally, Makor depends on volunteers to create the Makor Shabbat experience, and we are always looking for new hosts! Sign up today by clicking here!
